Start the conversation before the final restoration visit ends
Ask the implant team for a written maintenance plan you can use at home and bring to future appointments. If the team gives you instructions for the first days as well as instructions for daily care later, ask them to label each set clearly. Confirm when you should start each step. If your next review is with a different office, ask who will send the plan and who will answer questions in the meantime.
Ask for a demonstration on your restoration
Ask the dentist or hygienist to show you the areas they want you to clean and which tools they recommend for your restoration. Have them point out a spot you might have trouble reaching, then ask whether you can try the technique while they watch. If you cannot see the area easily or find a tool difficult to hold, explain what makes it awkward. Ask for instructions you can follow with the supplies and setup you actually have at home.
Write down who checks what
Ask which office will provide routine care and which one you should contact if a question comes up about the restoration. Write down the date or timing of the next review and ask what the team plans to check. If the office that placed the implant is different from the office that fitted the final restoration, ask who keeps the details of each and how to request a copy. Keep any component information the team gives you alongside the maintenance instructions.
Use the Toronto map if you see more than one office
Put each office’s address beside its role on your plan. Use the Toronto neighbourhood map above to orient yourself, then confirm the building entrance and suite for the actual appointment. Check which office will update the plan when your maintenance instructions change.
Bring the plan back to the next review
Make a note of what you could do easily and what was hard to reach. Bring your questions and the written plan to the review. Ask the clinician to demonstrate any change, then update your note with the revised instruction and the date it was given.
